Hephaestus, the god of fire, metalworking, and craftsmanship, was the only Olympian god who was physically imperfect. According to myth, he was cast out of Mount Olympus by his mother Hera (or by Zeus during an argument). He fell for an entire day before landing on the island of Lemnos.
The fall left him permanently crippled, but the local Sintians cared for him. In return, he set up his divine forge beneath the island's volcano. There, with the help of the Cyclopes, he crafted magnificent weapons and magical items for the gods and heroes, including Achilles' armor and Hermes' winged sandals.
