In the cosmic dawn of existence, the universe was not yet ordered into the distinct realms of heaven, earth, and underworld. Instead, it existed in a state of formless, swirling chaos—a vast, dark ocean of primeval brine, thick and silent, stretching infinitely beneath the heavens. This was the time before the sun, before the moon, and before the dry earth had taken any shape or form. Within the high spiritual plains of Takamagahara, the first generations of invisible heavenly deities, the Kotoamatsukami and the Kamiyononayo, manifested in silent majesty. From these successive lineages of divine beings, the final pair of the seven generations of the primordial Shinto gods emerged: Izanagi-no-Mikoto, the "Male-Who-Invites," and Izanami-no-Mikoto, the "Female-Who-Invites."
Seeing the formless mass of chaos below, the elder heavenly deities decided that the chaotic world needed order, form, and stability. They summoned the youthful brother-and-sister pair, Izanagi and Izanami, instructing them to descend to the dark abyss, consolidate the drifting waters, and give birth to a solid land where life could take root. To aid them in this monumental cosmic labor, the elder gods bestowed upon them a great treasure: the Ame-no-Nuboko, the Heavenly Jeweled Spear. This sacred weapon was magnificent to behold, crafted from the finest celestial elements, its shaft beautifully lacquered and its blade adorned with shimmering, supernatural jewels that held the essence of light and structure.
Clasping the heavy spear together, Izanagi and Izanami made their way to the Amenoukihashi, the Floating Bridge of Heaven, which hung suspended between the high celestial plains of Takamagahara and the dark, watery void below. Peering over the railing of the misty bridge, they looked down into the endless, silent expanse of the churning dark waters. The world below was a thick, gel-like soup of potential energy, lacking direction, boundaries, or form. They realized that they could not descend directly into such a fluid and unstable environment, so they resolved to work from their vantage point upon the divine bridge.
With great purpose and synchronized effort, Izanagi and Izanami reached down from the Floating Bridge of Heaven and thrust the glittering tip of the Ame-no-Nuboko deep into the dark, silent depths of the primordial sea. The jeweled lance cut through the heavy, ancient brine. Together, the two deities began to stir the primeval ocean, swirling the heavenly spear in a slow, rhythmic, and powerful circular motion. As the spear churned the depths, the physical qualities of the primordial waters began to change. The dark waters, which had been silent and stagnant for eons, began to hiss, bubble, and spin, reacting to the divine, organizing power emanating from the celestial jewels of the lance.
They stirred the ocean until a great, swirling vortex was formed, drawing the heavy, unrefined elements of the chaos toward the center of the motion. A deep, low rumble echoed through the cosmos as the disorganized particles of the universe began to bind together, separating the light and clear elements from the dark, heavy, and solid ones. Feeling the thick resistance of the consolidating ocean, Izanagi and Izanami knew their initial work was complete. Slowly and carefully, they lifted the heavy shaft of the Ame-no-Nuboko out of the swirling depths and brought it back up toward the Floating Bridge of Heaven.
As the tip of the spear cleared the surface of the roiling waters, droplets of the thick, concentrated brine clung to its gleaming jeweled point. The concentrated salt and primordial essence of the ocean, having been charged with the creative energy of the celestial gods, began to crystallize in the cool air of heaven. One by one, heavy, sparkling droplets of condensed brine fell from the tip of the spear back into the ocean below. Instead of dissolving back into the liquid chaos, these droplets solidified upon contact with the water, coagulating rapidly. The crystallized brine grew outward, expanding into a solid, stable landmass that rose proudly above the waves. This newly formed sacred territory was Onogoroshima, the "Self-Condensing Island."
Beholding the solid earth they had brought into existence, Izanagi and Izanami descended from the Floating Bridge of Heaven and set foot upon Onogoroshima. For the first time, their divine feet touched solid, dry ground. On this island, they erected a magnificent, towering heavenly pillar, the Ame-no-Mihashira, to anchor the earth to the heavens, and they built a vast palace known as the Yahiro-dono, the Eight-Fathom Palace, to serve as their home. From this sacred stronghold, the divine couple would embark on the next phase of their cosmic destiny: the Kuniumi, the creation of the beautiful islands of Japan, and the Kamiumi, the birth of the countless kami who would rule over the mountains, rivers, winds, and fires of the natural world.
