In the dawning days of the cosmos, when the earth was still young, driftless, and floating like oil upon the vast primordial waters, the heavenly deities of the high plain of Takamagahara cast their gaze downward. The world was a chaotic mass of potential, lacking form, shape, and structure. Seeking to bring order and beauty to this liquid expanse, the celestial rulers summoned two primeval deities, the young male Izanagi-no-Mikoto and the young female Izanami-no-Mikoto. They were entrusted with the sacred mission to construct, solidify, and populate the terrestrial realm. To assist them in this monumental task, the elder gods presented them with Ame-no-nuboko, the heavily decorated, jewel-encrusted Heavenly Jeweled Spear.
Taking their place upon the Ame-no-ukihashi, the Floating Bridge of Heaven, Izanagi and Izanami leaned over the edge of the celestial void and plunged the grand spear into the swirling, misty depths below. They stirred the briny ocean with a rhythmic, powerful motion. When they finally lifted the heavy spear back toward the heavens, the salt water dripping from its gleaming tip coagulated and crystallized, falling back into the sea to form Onogoro-shima, the Spontaneously Congealing Island. Eager to begin their earthly work, the two deities descended from the heavens and established their dwelling on this freshly solidified land.
Upon Onogoro-shima, Izanagi and Izanami built a magnificent palace worthy of their divine status. At the very heart of this residence, they erected the Ame-no-mihashira, the Great Heavenly Pillar, which served as a cosmic axis connecting the earthly ground with the ethereal high plains above. As they lived together in this grand palace, they gazed upon one another and recognized the natural, complementary differences in their physical forms. Izanagi observed that his body contained an excess of form, while Izanami noted that her body possessed a certain incompleteness. Realizing that their union could bring forth new life to cover the earth, Izanagi proposed that they walk around the Great Heavenly Pillar in a sacred wedding ritual to consummate their partnership.
They agreed upon the precise parameters of the ritual. Izanagi would walk around the grand pillar from the left side, moving clockwise, while Izanami would circle it from the right side, moving counterclockwise. When they eventually met on the opposite side of the pillar, they would greet one another and seal their holy union. However, as they completed their respective paths around the pillar and came face to face, the overwhelming joy of the moment overcame Izanami. Captivated by Izanagi's majestic presence, she spoke first, exclaiming in delight, 'Oh, what a handsome and wondrous youth!' Izanagi, taken aback by her spontaneous exclamation, replied in kind, 'Oh, what a beautiful and lovely maiden!' Yet, a shadow of hesitation fell over Izanagi's mind. He felt that it was improper for the female deity to initiate the greeting, as it disrupted the cosmic flow of active initiation and passive reception. Nevertheless, they proceeded with their union.
In due course, Izanami became pregnant with their first child. However, the spiritual disharmony caused by their flawed ritual bore bitter fruit. When the time came for Izanami to give birth, she did not deliver a robust, radiant deity capable of ruling the land. Instead, she brought forth a terribly deformed, bone-less infant known as Hiruko, the Leech-Child. Lacking bones, limbs, or the structure to stand or crawl, the child was soft, jelly-like, and struggled to survive in the physical world. The young divine parents looked upon their firstborn with deep sorrow and profound confusion, unable to understand why their divine lineage had produced such an unfortunate, fragile being.
Unsure of how to care for a child who could not support his own weight, and realizing that he could not fulfill the grand destiny of shaping the terrestrial empire, Izanagi and Izanami made a painful decision. They wove a sturdy basket out of fresh, flexible reeds from the shoreline, forming a small, buoyant boat. Placing the delicate, bone-less Hiruko gently inside the reed vessel, they set the boat upon the cresting waves of the ocean, letting the currents of the sea carry the infant away to whatever destiny the universe had in store for him. They watched from the shore as the tiny vessel bobbed up and down on the vast, blue horizon until it finally disappeared from sight.
