In the primordial age of the Olympian gods, when the world was still finding its rhythm under the rule of Zeus, a great drama unfolded in the heavens and across the seas. Leto, a daughter of the Titans Coeus and Phoebe, was known for her gentle nature and dark-robed beauty. She had won the affection of Zeus, the King of the Gods, and from their union, she became pregnant with twins who were destined to be among the most powerful deities in the pantheon. However, this divine pregnancy did not go unnoticed by Hera, the queen of the gods and the lawful wife of Zeus. Consumed by a fierce and relentless jealousy, Hera sought to ensure that Leto would find no peace and no place to bring her children into the world.
Hera cast a powerful curse upon the very foundations of the earth. She decreed that no land that was 'fixed' or rooted in the seabed, and no place that the sun shone upon, should offer sanctuary to Leto for her delivery. Furthermore, Hera dispatched the monstrous serpent Python, a creature of the earth born from the mud of the Deucalion flood, to pursue Leto across the continents. The poor goddess, heavy with the weight of the unborn Apollo and Artemis, found herself a fugitive. She traveled through the rugged mountains of Thrace, the fertile plains of Thessaly, and the bustling cities of the Peloponnese, but everywhere she turned, the personified lands and cities turned her away. They feared the wrath of Hera and the terrible punishment that would surely follow if they defied the queen’s command.
Leto’s journey was one of immense suffering and isolation. She sought refuge in Athens, in Aegina, and in the distant lands of the east, but the earth itself seemed to recoil from her touch out of sheer terror. It was during this time that Leto looked toward the Aegean Sea, where the Cyclades islands lay scattered like gems. Among them was a peculiar, desolate, and rocky island known then as Ortygia (the island of Quails) or Asteria. This island had a unique history; it was said to be the transformed body of Leto’s own sister, Asteria, who had plunged into the sea to escape the advances of Zeus. Because it was a floating mass, drifting aimlessly with the currents and not yet anchored to the earth’s crust, it did not fall under the technical jurisdiction of Hera’s curse against 'fixed' land.
When Leto reached the shores of this barren rock, she pleaded with the spirit of the island. She promised that if the island would allow her to give birth there, her son Apollo would build a magnificent temple upon its soil, bringing it eternal fame and wealth. The island, tired of its aimless drifting and its reputation as a wasteland, agreed to the pact but expressed a deep fear: it worried that the great god Apollo, upon seeing how rugged and poor the island was, might despise it and push it down into the depths of the sea. Leto swore a solemn oath by the river Styx—the most binding oath of the gods—that Apollo would always honor the island above all other places. Satisfied, the island became the sanctuary Leto so desperately needed.
However, the ordeal was far from over. As Leto prepared for labor at the base of Mount Cynthus, Hera continued her sabotage. She held back Eileithyia, the goddess of childbirth, on the peaks of Mount Olympus, keeping her hidden behind a thick cloud of ignorance. Without Eileithyia’s presence, the labor could not be completed. Leto suffered in agony for nine days and nine nights. Other goddesses, including Dione, Rhea, Themis, and Amphitrite, gathered around her in sympathy, but they were powerless to help without the divine midwife. They eventually sent Iris, the messenger of the gods, to Olympus with a bribe—a magnificent necklace of gold and amber nine cubits long. Iris managed to spirit Eileithyia away from Hera’s watchful eye and brought her down to the island.
The moment Eileithyia set foot on the island, the actual birth began. Leto leaned against the slope of Mount Cynthus and grasped a sacred palm tree (some say an olive tree as well) to brace herself. The first to be born was Artemis, the goddess of the hunt and the moon. In a display of her future role as a protector of women, the infant Artemis immediately grew and assisted her mother in the delivery of her twin brother. As the sun began to rise, Apollo, the god of light, music, and prophecy, was born. At the moment of his birth, the island of Delos—formerly Ortygia—was suddenly bathed in a golden light. The barren rocks were covered in golden flowers, and the island became fixed in place, anchored by four mighty pillars that rose from the bottom of the sea to ensure it would never drift again.
The birth of the twins marked a shift in the cosmic order. Apollo immediately declared his domain over the lyre and the bow, and his intent to proclaim the will of Zeus to humanity. The island of Delos, once a forgotten rock, became the most sacred site in the Greek world, a center for pilgrimage and the home of a great oracle before the establishment of Delphi. Yet, even after the birth, Hera’s shadow loomed. Leto was forced to flee again, leading to the famous encounter with the Lycian peasants. Exhausted and thirsty, she stopped at a pond in Lycia to drink, but the local peasants, fearing Hera or simply being cruel, stirred up the mud at the bottom to make the water undrinkable. In her frustration and divine power, Leto transformed the peasants into frogs, condemning them to live forever in the mud they had stirred.
