The Bull Demon King Transforming into a Giant White Bull to Fight Sun Wukong

The air in the Basin of Turpan did not merely feel hot; it felt like a living entity, a heavy, suffocating blanket of fire that pressed against the skin of Tang Sanzang and his three disciples. The Flaming Mountains, or Huoyan Mountains, stretched across the horizon like a jagged scar of red sandstone, their gullies and trenches shimmering in the heat as if the earth itself were liquid. To the Monk of the Tang Dynasty, the path ahead seemed impossible. Every step forward on the scorched earth felt as though he were walking upon the lid of a cosmic furnace. It was here, in this desolate and blistering landscape, that one of the most significant confrontations of the journey would take place, pitting the Great Sage Equal to Heaven against his ancient comrade-turned-foe, the Bull Demon King.

Sun Wukong, ever the perceptive protector, shielded his eyes and gazed toward the peaks. He knew the history of this place. Years ago, during his rebellion against the Heavens, he had kicked over the Eight Trigrams Furnace of Laozi, and the burning coals had fallen to earth, creating these very mountains. Now, his own past was literally blocking his path toward enlightenment. The local inhabitants informed the pilgrims that only the Banana Leaf Fan, possessed by the Princess Iron Fan at the Emerald Cloud Cave, could quench the flames. However, the Princess was the wife of the Bull Demon King and the mother of Red Boy, a demon child Wukong had previously defeated and handed over to the Bodhisattva Guanyin. The grudge was deep, and the reception Wukong received was anything but brotherly.

When Wukong first arrived at the cave, the Princess Iron Fan refused him with a fury that matched the mountains' heat. She brandished the magical fan and, with a single swing, sent the Monkey King flying fifty thousand miles through the air. Only by the grace of the Wind-Fixing Pill, gifted to him by the Lingji Bodhisattva, was Wukong able to return and stand his ground. Realizing that brute force and direct requests would not prevail, Wukong resorted to his signature guile. He transformed himself into a tiny fly, slipped into the Princess's tea, and entered her stomach, causing her such agony that she surrendered a fan. Yet, this fan was a fake, and when Wukong tried to use it on the mountains, the flames only leaped higher, singeing his fur and testing his legendary patience.

Desperate, Wukong learned that the Bull Demon King, also known as Niu Mowang, was feasting at the underwater palace of the Dragon King of the Emerald Waves. Sensing an opportunity, Wukong transformed himself into the Bull Demon King's likeness and visited the Princess Iron Fan. The deception was masterful; he played the role of the husband perfectly, and in her softened state, the Princess revealed the location of the true Banana Leaf Fan. Wukong seized the treasure and fled, but his triumph was short-lived. The real Bull Demon King, discovering the theft and the insult to his wife, was consumed by a righteous demonic rage. He was no ordinary mountain demon; he was the Great Sage Who Pacifies Heaven, a creature of immense strength and magical prowess who had once stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Wukong.

The Bull Demon King chased Wukong and, using Wukong’s own tactics against him, transformed into the likeness of Zhu Bajie. He intercepted the unsuspecting Wukong and reclaimed the fan through trickery. When Wukong realized he had been duped by his own move, the mountain range shook with his roar. The battle that followed was not merely a physical brawl but a metaphysical war of forms. The two giants of the demon world clashed near the Flaming Mountains, their weapons—the Golden Hoop Rod and the Iron Trident—striking with the force of falling stars. Sparks flew from their blades, igniting the dry air, as they moved through the sky and across the scorched ridges.

As the fight intensified, the Bull Demon King showcased his mastery of the seventy-two transformations. When Wukong turned into a hungry eagle to swoop down, the Bull Demon King became a fierce crane. When Wukong became a leopard, the Bull Demon King became a massive tiger. They cycled through hundreds of forms—beasts, birds, and insects—each attempting to find the predator-prey advantage over the other. The earth trembled under the weight of their combat, and the sky darkened with the dust kicked up by their movements. Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing arrived to assist Wukong, creating a three-pronged assault that forced the Bull Demon King to retreat toward the heights of the Flaming Mountains.
