In the primordial age of the celestial heavens, the Jade Emperor ruled with an iron adherence to the 'Heavenly Laws,' which strictly forbade any romantic entanglement between deities and mortals. Among his most cherished kin was his sister, the beautiful and compassionate goddess Yaoji (sometimes referred to as the Princess Yunhua). Yaoji was tasked with managing the movements of the clouds and ensuring the balance of the elements on Earth. However, during one of her descents to the mortal realm to track a rebellious dragon, she encountered a scholar named Yang Tianyou. Unlike the stoic and distant gods of the high court, Yang Tianyou possessed a soul of profound kindness and an appreciation for the transient beauty of the human world. To the shock of the heavenly bureaucracy, Yaoji fell in love with this mortal man. She chose to reside in the world of men, setting aside her divine status to live as a wife and mother. Together, they had three children: a son named Yang Jian (who would later be known as Erlang Shen), a daughter named Yang Chan, and in some traditions, an older brother. For years, they lived in a hidden sanctuary, shielded by Yaoji’s remaining divine power.
However, the Jade Emperor’s 'Heavenly Eye' eventually pierced the veil of their domestic bliss. Infuriated by what he perceived as a betrayal of the divine order and a pollution of the celestial bloodline, the Emperor dispatched a vast army of Heavenly Soldiers and Generals to apprehend his sister and her family. The intervention was swift and merciless. Yang Tianyou was killed during the onslaught, and the children were scattered, fleeing for their lives. Yaoji herself was captured and brought before the Jade Emperor. Refusing to repent for her love of a mortal, she was sentenced to a punishment that would serve as a warning to all other immortals: she was to be crushed and imprisoned beneath the roots of Mount Peach (Taoshan). The mountain was not merely a physical barrier but a metaphysical prison, reinforced by divine seals that no ordinary god or demon could hope to break. There, Yaoji remained for years, her divine light dimmed by the weight of the earth, yet her spirit remained unbroken as she hoped for the survival of her children.
Yang Jian, the young son, survived the massacre by hiding in the dense forests and rugged peaks of what is now the Sichuan province. Bearing the burden of his father’s death and his mother’s disappearance, he wandered until he was discovered by the Taoist immortal Yuding Zhenren. Recognizing the immense potential in the boy—a rare hybrid of divine essence and mortal willpower—Yuding Zhenren took him as a disciple. Under the immortal’s tutelage, Yang Jian underwent a transformation. He mastered the Seventy-Two Earthly Transformations, allowing him to take the shape of any creature or object. He learned to manipulate the elements and, most importantly, he awakened the 'Third Eye' in the center of his forehead. This celestial eye could see through any illusion, perceive the truth of the universe, and discharge beams of pure energy capable of shattering the darkest magic. Throughout his training, Yang Jian’s singular focus was the rescue of his mother. He spent his days tempering his body in the icy waterfalls of the mountains and his nights meditating on the flow of the cosmos, refining his rage into a disciplined, unstoppable force.
As Yang Jian reached adulthood and achieved the status of a high immortal, he learned the location of his mother’s prison. He knew that the divine seals of Mount Peach could only be broken by a weapon of equal cosmic significance. Through various trials, he obtained a massive, three-pointed, double-edged spear and a legendary golden axe of immense proportions. With his faithful companion, the Xiaotian Quan (Howling Celestial Dog), at his side, he marched toward Mount Peach. The journey was a gauntlet of trials; the Jade Emperor, sensing his nephew’s intent, placed numerous obstacles and guardians in his path. Yang Jian fought through legions of celestial guards, outsmarted mountain spirits, and used his third eye to navigate the labyrinthine deceptions of the terrain. His resolve was a beacon that drew the attention of both the heavens and the underworld, for never before had a half-mortal dared to challenge the Emperor’s specific decree with such direct force.
