High atop the mist-shrouded peaks of the Kunlun Mountains, where the boundaries between the celestial realms and the mortal world blur into a tapestry of clouds and jade, the Great Master Yuanshi Tianzun presided over the Jade Void Palace. For decades, two disciples had walked these hallowed paths, yet their hearts were as different as the sun and the moon. Jiang Ziya, a man of patience and humility, had spent forty years in meditation, seeking not power, but the wisdom to follow the Mandate of Heaven. In contrast, his junior fellow apprentice, Shen Gongbao, was a man of restless ambition and profound magical talent. While Jiang Ziya struggled with the basic elements of transformation, Shen Gongbao mastered the esoteric arts with a speed that bred a dangerous level of pride.
The catalyst for their legendary confrontation began when Yuanshi Tianzun summoned Jiang Ziya to his throne. The Master revealed that the destiny of the Shang Dynasty was nearing its end, and the Zhou Dynasty was destined to rise. To manage the transition and the souls of those who would fall in the coming conflict, the Master bestowed upon Jiang Ziya the 'Fengshen Bang' or the List of Creation. This sacred scroll was the key to deifying the heroes and villains of the age, granting Jiang Ziya the authority of a celestial architect. However, as Jiang Ziya descended the mountain with the heavy burden of the list, he was intercepted by Shen Gongbao.
Shen Gongbao had long felt overlooked. He viewed Jiang Ziya as a slow-witted old man who was unworthy of such a monumental task. As the two met on the jagged slopes of Kunlun, the air crackled with the energy of their opposing wills. Shen Gongbao blocked Jiang’s path, his eyes burning with a mix of envy and mockery. He questioned why a man of Jiang's limited magical prowess should be the one to carry out the heavens' will. Shen Gongbao boasted that he himself possessed thirty-six transformations and seventy-two methods of flight, making him the more logical choice for the mission. To prove his point, he proposed a wager that would demonstrate his mastery over life and death itself.
'Brother Jiang,' Shen Gongbao sneered, 'you rely on the Master's favor because you lack true power. Let us see if your faith can match my skill. I shall take my own sword, sever my head from my shoulders, and send it flying through the clouds. It shall travel thousands of miles and return to my neck without a single drop of blood being spilled. If I succeed, you must admit that you are unfit for the List and burn the scroll here on this mountain. If I fail, I shall never trouble you again.' Jiang Ziya, though wary of the stakes, felt bound by the protocols of his order and the pressure of the moment. He agreed to the wager, unaware that the Master Yuanshi Tianzun was watching from the heights above, testing the resolve of his chosen emissary.
Shen Gongbao laughed, a sound like dry leaves skittering over stone. He drew a shimmering blade and, with a swift and terrifying motion, sliced through his own neck. To Jiang Ziya’s horror, the head of Shen Gongbao did not fall. Instead, it rose into the air, surrounded by a swirling vortex of black and purple smoke. The body remained standing, firm and unmoving like a statue of ancient pine, while the head ascended into the heavens. It spun and tumbled through the atmosphere, shouting insults and boasting of its freedom as it soared over the jagged peaks of the Kunlun range. Shen Gongbao’s laughter echoed through the valleys, a chilling reminder of his dark affinity for the forbidden arts.
For a moment, it seemed that Shen Gongbao would win his wager. The head reached the highest strata of the clouds, preparing to make its triumphant return to the silent body waiting below. However, the arrogance of the act had disturbed the balance of the mountain. Yuanshi Tianzun, seeing that Shen Gongbao intended to use this victory to thwart the divine plan, signaled to his attendant, the White Crane Boy. The boy transformed into a massive, celestial crane with wings like white silk and a beak as sharp as a diamond. With the speed of a falling star, the crane dived from the Jade Void Palace toward the flying head.
