In the highest reaches of the Celestial Realm, where the firmament is composed of shimmering jade and the clouds are spun from the breath of dragons, there lived a deity of immense power and prestige. This was Marshal Canopy, or Tianpeng Yuanshuai, the commander-in-chief of the eighty thousand sailors of the Heavenly Navy. Clad in silver armor that reflected the light of a thousand stars and wielding a nine-toothed rake forged in the fires of the heavens, he was a figure of authority and strength. His duties were vast, overseeing the celestial waters and ensuring the harmony of the cosmic tides. However, beneath his martial exterior lay a penchant for indulgence and a growing sense of arrogance that would eventually prove to be his undoing.
The turning point in the Marshal’s immortal existence occurred during the legendary Peach Banquet, a grand festival hosted by the Queen Mother of the West to celebrate the ripening of the peaches of immortality. All the high-ranking gods, goddesses, and celestial officials were invited to the Jade Emperor’s palace. The air was thick with the scent of divine incense and the music of celestial lutes. Long tables were laden with golden platters of dragon-liver snacks, phoenix-marrow delicacies, and, most importantly, jars of the finest celestial wine, fermented from the essence of starlight and ancient nectar. Marshal Canopy, enjoying his status and the festive atmosphere, drank more than his share. As jar after jar was emptied, the wine’s potent magic began to cloud his judgment, turning his usual confidence into a reckless, swaggering bravado.
In his drunken state, the Marshal’s thoughts turned toward the Moon Palace, known as the Guanghan Palace or the Palace of Vast Cold. This ethereal residence was the home of Chang'e, the Goddess of the Moon, whose beauty was said to be so profound that it could still the winds and hush the celestial choirs. Chang'e lived a life of quiet elegance, accompanied only by the Jade Rabbit who pounded the elixir of life beneath the shade of the laurel tree. Driven by a sudden, uncontrollable impulse born of his intoxication, Marshal Canopy stumbled away from the banquet hall, his footsteps heavy and uneven as he navigated the translucent bridges of the heavenly city.
He reached the gates of the Moon Palace, where the air grew cold and the light turned into a soft, silvery glow. Ignoring the sacred silence of the sanctuary, the Marshal burst into the presence of Chang'e. He began to shower her with clumsy compliments and bold advances, boasting of his power as a general and his desire for her company. Chang'e, a figure of grace and purity, was horrified by this intrusion. She rebuked him sternly, reminding him of his duty and the laws of Heaven that forbade such base behavior among the immortals. But the Marshal, his mind entirely lost to the drink, would not be deterred. He followed her through the halls of the palace, his voice booming and his actions increasingly disrespectful, causing a disturbance that echoed through the quiet corridors of the lunar realm.
The commotion did not go unnoticed. The celestial guards, alerted by the Moon Goddess's distress and the Marshal's loud transgressions, quickly converged on the Guanghan Palace. They found the mighty commander in a state of disarray, his armor tarnished by his conduct and his dignity completely dissolved. He was promptly arrested and dragged before the Jade Emperor, the supreme ruler of Heaven. The court was silent as the Emperor looked down from his throne. The crime of harassing a goddess and disturbing the peace of the Celestial Realm was a grave one, particularly for a high-ranking official who was expected to uphold the strictest codes of conduct.
Despite the Marshal's previous service, the Jade Emperor showed no mercy. The law of the heavens was absolute. He sentenced Marshal Canopy to receive two thousand strikes from a heavy iron hammer, a punishment intended to shatter his divine essence and break his spirit. After the brutal beating, which left the Marshal broken and bloody, the Emperor ordered him to be banished from the Celestial Realm forever. He was to be cast down into the mortal world, forced to undergo reincarnation and live as a common being, stripped of his title, his armor, and his place among the stars.
